Objectives of the course:

Introducing students to the main concepts , terminology and methods of theories of syntax. 
Course Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will be able to: 
1. Understand the applications of transformation grammar.
2. Gain further understanding of the principles of transformational generative grammar.
3. Differentiate between the surface and deep structure meanings of word groups or parts of sentences.
4. Analyze English sentences using tree diagrams and brackets.
Course Content:
1. Introduction to theories of syntax I.
2. Historical background.
3. Surface structure vs. deep structure.
4. Immediate constituent analysis vs. phrase structure rules.
5. Obligatory vs. optional transformations.
6. Types of transformational rules (I).
7. Types of transformational rules (II).
Methods of Assessment:
1. Course Work (Assignments, Homework, Mid-Term Test)        30%
